Seeking feedback on Open Access publication funding

May 4, 2012 – 11:41 am

On Wednesday, May 2, 2012, the University Libraries and the Office of the Provost held a faculty forum to discuss the possibility of creating a fund to help Mason faculty publish in open access journals.  A copy of the presentation slides is available through MARS (http://digilib.gmu.edu:8080/dspace/handle/1920/7542) A video recording of the forum will also be posted on the Scholarly Communication at Mason  website (scholarly.gmu.edu) as soon as it is available.

Whether or not you were able to attend the forum, you’re welcome to share your thoughts about the possibility of creating the open access publishing fund at Mason. Research Unbound Through Open Access

October 13, 2011 – 6:00 pm

The fifth annual International Open Access Week kicks off on October 24. Through the sponsorship and support of University Libraries, Mason has been celebrating this event for four years and, like past years, this year’s activities promise to be educational and engaging. In addition to the informational tables we’ll have set up in (or near) each library, we will be presenting a panel highlighting different aspects of open access publishing models.

The panel, Research Unbound Through Open Access, will take place on Wednesday, October 26, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in Research Hall, room 163. Dr. Joseph Serene, Treasurer/Publisher for the American Physical Society, will discuss the first year of the society’s launch into open access publishing, offered to authors as an alternative to the traditional model. BioMed Central’s Robert Schatz, North American Sales Manager, will talk about the sustained success of BMC’s “gold” open access publishing model. Dr. Daniel Cohen, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, will describe PressForward, a site hosted by CHNM that serves as a platform for sharing, compiling, and publishing scholarship. Economic aspects of open access publishing and its repercussions on the industry and on library purchasing power will be presented by Dr. Omar Al-Ubaydli, Assistant Professor of Economics at George Mason University. Light refreshments will be served.
