Legal Downloading Sites

There are many alternatives to using peer-to-peer networks to download music, television shows, and movies. The Copyright Resources Office has compiled the list below and also distributes this P2P Alternatives handout. (PDF)

Creative Commons maintains a directory of organizations and projects that use Creative Commons licenses. Audio, video, text, image, book and movie files are included.

EDUCAUSE offers a vetted list of sites from which streaming or downloadable free music, shows, and movies are accessible. Take a look at their note reminding users that “just because content is free doesn’t mean it’s illegal” or, on the other hand, “Just because content is not free doesn’t mean it’s legal.”

Internet Archive has a live music archive, as well as moving images, audio, and text available to stream or download.
