Several years ago, sentence diagramming was one of the main methods of teaching grammar (the idea was that if you saw all of the parts of speech laid out, it would make more sense). The New York Times has a feature on S.W. Clark, the inventor of sentence diagramming:

You can access this e-Book online via the Mason Libraries (only available off campus to Mason students, faculty, and staff)
The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published a piece about some provocative research on an Amazonian language that challenges Chomsky’s theory of Universal Grammar:
